Chautauqua/Allegany Region Information

There is no denying the wonder of Western New York’s Chautauqua/Allegany Region. Filled with history and chock full of activities and leisure, a vacation in Chautauqua has everything you will need to bring home bright smiles and long-lasting memories. The southwestern tip of the state, Chautauqua County enjoys about 50 miles of coastline with Lake Erie, and gets its name from the 20-mile long Chautauqua Lake. The Allegany come from Allegany County and the portion of the Allegany River that runs through the region. This area of New York offers some of the most unique and entertaining vacation destinations and events spread throughout the gorgeous countryside. Beaches, golf courses, museums, farmers markets, spas, and much, much more.

During the spring, summer, and fall months vacationers from all over New York head to phenomenal Chautauqua Lake for some of the most pristine waters this side of the Mississippi. The lake is known for offering a friendly atmosphere, events all summer long around the lakefront, and fantastic watersports. There are plenty of wonderful beach side towns for you to choose from for your next vacation rental. You could head to Dewittville on the northeastern side of the lake, a quick stroll away from the lake. Known for its hospitality, Dewittville is also less than a mile from Chautauqua Point Golf Course, a well known top notch course right on the lake, perfect for a midday 9 in the sunshine. Head south on East Lake Rd. and you’ll come across Maple Springs, a nice little lakeside town that’s home to Midway Park, one of the USA’s longest continually running amusement parks. Running smooth since 1951, Midway Park has a wide variety of attractions and entertainment for the whole family.

A little farther south down the Chautauqua coast and you’ll find Long Point on Chautauqua Lake State Park, complete with stunning views, hiking, amazing fishing, and loads of untouched beauty. Find a place to stay in nearby Bemus Point, a popular tourist spot full of lakefront accommodations and fully furnished vacation rentals. Home to superb coastline and 19th century charms, Bemus Point is more than just beaches and B&B’s. The town also has numerous little shops and classic restaurants and eateries for you and your family to enjoy, as well as a floating stage on the lake where there are shows all summer long. Many of the buildings were built over a century ago so it’s perfect for any history or architecture buff. And it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump to Long Point State Park. At the very bottom of the lake’s shoreline is the town of Lakewood, a small resort town bursting with Chautauqua simplicity and culture. Camping is a favorite pastime of the visitors here, as well as dipping in the lake and spending the day in Richard O. Hartley Memorial Park. The folks of Lakewood love their maple syrup, fresh from the maples that surround the town, and it doesn’t take long for vacationers to jump on the bandwagon. Home to two small maple sugaring outfits, one of the two also gives tours and demos so you and the family can see how they get maple syrup from the trees year-round. And be sure to leave your address so they can send you a constant supply of syrup off their shelves. If golfing is your passion, Lakewood is also home to two golf courses, The Maplehurst Country Club and Sunset Valley Golf Course.

West of Lakewood is the town of Jamestown. Steeped in American history, Jamestown was once known as the “Furniture Capital of the World” due to the amount of furniture the town produced and shipped all around the country from the 1800’s well into the twentieth century. A walk or bike ride around town reveals luscious old world architecture and the makings of a once bustling manufacturing and shipping hub, providing plenty of snapshot opportunities so bring a camera and extra film. For baseball lovers, Jamestown is the home of the Jamestown Jammers, a single-A team for the Florida Marlins, as well as host of the ever popular Babe Ruth World Series 13 times since 1980. In 2008 Jamestown will once again host the 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series of baseball. Jamestown was the starting grounds for many famous celebrities and politicians, most notably and most proudly Lucille Ball. Spend the day touring Jamestown’s two locally run museums dedicated to the legendary TV star and comedian; the Desilu Playhouse and the Lucy-Desi Museum, then head home with a one-of-a-kind experience to tell your neighbors about.

From Lakewood up the western side of Chautauqua Lake, the shoreline is spotted with tiny lakeside villages and campgrounds, then you come to the town of Chautauqua. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989, Chautauqua is a town unlike any other. Filled with awe-inspiring historic architecture, it is a place of rejuvenation and prestige. People come here to relax as well as expand their horizons by experiencing a wide variety of arts, entertainment, and activities. Chautauqua, or the Chautauqua Institution, embraces its thriving arts community and it shows in its many galleries and in the various performances held throughout the year. Many of the town’s regular visitors not only come here for rest, relaxation, good food, and good shopping, but for an intellectual and spiritual retreat, where they can immerse themselves in Chautauqua’s way of life. Great golfing is commonplace in this region and Chautauqua is not different, with the Chautauqua Golf Club situated right on the lake and within reach from anywhere in town. Oh, and don’t forget, the Chautauqua Institution is also the proud home of four separate beaches open all summer long. You could even rent a sailboat or kayak and spend the whole day traveling the lake. And when you’re done you can head to your home away from home, one of Chautauqua’s exquisite vacation rentals and historic accommodations for an experience you won’t find anywhere else. Or for even more serenity close to Chautauqua Institution, another popular destination is Mayville, a lovely little town on the northern part of Chautauqua Lake. Mayville’s attraction for travelers and locals alike is the plethora of activities available just around the corner. Golf, boating, hiking, fishing, shopping, dining, and even ice fishing and snowmobiling in the winter, are all a quick walk or short, scenic drive from Mayville’s charming accommodations. Mayville is also known for its many festivals, happening all year round, such as the Mayville ICE and Cool Jazz Festival, the Mayville Dock Festival, the Mayville Bluegrass Festival, and more, offering fun and entertainment for the whole family.

Ever wanted to go to the grape juice capital of the world? Well, even if you never thought of it before, why not take a trip to Westfield, NY anyways. The town gave itself this name because it’s the place where grape juice was born, and birthplace of the well known juice company, Welch’s. Welch’s was started by the Welch family early in the town’s history, and the family continues to grow grapes in the region to this day. Westfield’s lovely history and timelessness makes for a pleasant family getaway any time of year. Celebrate with the townspeople at the various events and festivals open to the public during the summer months, check out arts and crafts and antique shows, and tour through the farmer’s markets to get a taste of the region and, of course, some fresh grape juice. Westfield offers vacation homes, B&B’s, and more, and is only a short drive from the docks and secluded accommodations of nearby Barcelona on Lake Erie.

Chautauqua Lake isn’t the only recreational lake around here. It may be the biggest and get the most visitors, but don’t mention that to nearby Findley Lake. Right by the western border on New York and Pennsylvania, Findley Lake is a small lake, but big on fun and recreation. A big draw for tourists to this lake is it’s abundance of fresh water fish, and the hospitable community in town. Grab a boat, grab some gear, and head out for a day of bringing in the big catch. Another reason Findley Lake is becoming a more popular destination is how close it is to Peek ‘N Peak Resort, a gold rated, full-service family resort & spa nestled in the region, just south of Findley Lake. Peek ‘N Peak offers recreation year-round, with an incredible 36 holes of PGA quality golf, a big swimming pool complete with waterslides, an amazing spa, huge recreation room/arcade, mini-golf, skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and more. Throughout the summer Peek ‘N Peak also offers special events and activities, including concerts, a camp for the kids, and more. But Peek ‘N Peak isn’t the only place you can experience the world class skiing and snowboarding that the Chautauqua/Allegany region of New York has to offer.

Ellicottville is one of the most popular destinations in the region, and for good reason. Nuzzled into the Allegany Mountains, Ellicottville is home to some of the best skiing around in Holiday Valley and Holimont, offering pure slopes and fresh trails all winter long, and attracting skiing enthusiasts from around the world. Scared to get on skis? Not to worry, Ellicottville is also home to Holiday Valley Tubing Co., for your families tubing pleasure. In addition to hitting the slopes of the Allegany Mountains in the winter, you can also enjoy the sun and fun of Ellicottville during the summer, when you can go hiking, sightseeing, golfing at Holiday Valley’s scenic golf course, mountain biking, and spend the day at one the town’s summer festivals. The town also has a wealth of great restaurants and eateries renowned for their great food and hospitality. Ellicottville is also known for having some of the best accommodations in all of western NY, with incredible vacation rentals and homes, and elegant ski cabins and chalets nestled into the hills, stay in style at one of western NY’s most popular vacation destinations any time of year. Stay for a weekend, a week, or never leave, make Ellicottville your next vacation spot and you might not want to go home.

The Chautauqua/Allegany has so much more for you and your family to explore. You can head out to the town of Dunkirk for the Chautauqua County Fair, or to romp around nearby Lake Erie State Park, perfect for hiking, biking, camping, hitting the beach, fishing, and more. You can also bring your binoculars and go bird watching, as the park is known for being an excellent place for spotting rare migratory birds. Or head south to the Pennsylvania line and experience Allegany State Park, with over 65,000 acres of untouched forest, picturesque landscape, and abundant wildlife, there is something for everyone here. Find out where the region’s many local wineries are, complete with tours and tastings, and see why there has been so much recognition among wine enthusiasts for this grape-growing countryside. In fact, you could head to Fredonia on the Lake Erie coast and take a ride on the Chautauqua Wine Trail. And from wherever you decide to stay, make a day trip to Lily Dale, a town full of exploration and spiritual rejuvenation, dedicated to things above and beyond, home to the legendary Lily Dale Assembly. This lakeside community holds workshops and special events on spiritual development and has a long and interesting history waiting to be discovered.
