Niagara Falls Area Information
Nestled up to two of the Great Lakes and Canada is the Niagara/Lake Erie Region of New York. Home of Buffalo, the second largest city in the state, miles of lakefront beaches, and the wonder of Niagara Falls, a vacation in the Niagara Region has more to offer than one might think. See for yourself.
Buffalo, the epicenter of Erie County, is a city steeped in history in the midst of revitalization, known internationally for its professional sports and chicken wings. Buffalo may not seem like much at first glance, but a closer look reveals cultural treasures and tourist opportunities awaiting the savviest traveler. Many visitors are surprised when they experience Buffalo’s flourishing arts community and museums, rich architectural history, and upscale shopping and dining in its downtown neighborhoods. Buffalo is home to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, considered one of the greatest collections of modern art in the world, known specifically for its post-war American and European Art. Across historic Elmwood Ave. from this incredible gallery is The Burchfield-Penney Art Center, part of Buffalo State College and another permanent art collection not to be missed. Dozens of other galleries and arts spaces exist throughout the city, most with a modern feel and progressive, ever-changing collection, furthering Buffalo’s artistic reputation. This includes Hallwalls, a renowned contemporary art space housed in a renovated and restored 19th century church, under the support of local musician turned international artist, Ani DiFranco and her label Righteous Babe Records. Known lovingly as The Church, this phenomenal restored building in the heart of downtown Buffalo is just one shining example of Buffalo’s deep architectural history.
Architecture lovers will find the best of modern American buildings from celebrated architects such as Louis Sullivan, H.H. Richardson, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Stanford White, among others. Frank Lloyd Wright made a significant mark on Buffalo at the turn of the century, building numerous homes across the region, and still has an architectural and aesthetic impact on the city and region to this day. Guided tours are available of Wright’s Graycliff and Martin House Complex accomplishments, detailing his genius and his history in the city. Another architect that helped shape Buffalo’s past and future is E.B. Green. Designer of various awe-inspiring structures throughout the city, Green was the chief architect behind the beauty and ancient tranquility of the 1905 Greek revival building that is the home of the Albright-Knox Gallery today, resting on Delaware Park, part of the world-renowned Olmsted Park and Parkway System. Frederick Law Olmsted, considered by many to be the father of American landscape architecture, developed a park system and road system beyond comparison to any other in the country at its inception as well as today. Olmsted devised a system of 3 parks, which later became 6, all connected with 7 scenic, tree-lined parkways complete with 7 striking traffic circles, most of which are in tact today and in the process of being revamped. The parks are home to a number of leisurely activities, from biking and walking the numerous trails, playing some tennis or golf, or catching Shakespeare in the Park, the summer-long festival where the works of Shakespeare are rendered on stage in Delaware Park free of charge.
When it comes to theatre, Buffalo is proud of its longstanding tradition of excellence and reputation as an up and coming hub for the contemporary arts. The Queen City is home to 14 professional theatres, such as Shea’s Performing Arts Center, a grand old world-style opera house where you can see national acts and Broadway musicals, the Studio Arena Theatre, a nationally recognized producing theatre showcasing an eclectic variety of playbills, the Irish Classical Theatre, a small venue committed to the classics, and many more with varied performances throughout the year. The city is also the proud home of Kleinhans Music Hall, known for its architectural genius, where you can see the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra or the Buffalo Chamber Music Society recreate masterpieces. Or you could catch the Buffalo Philharmonic in the open summertime air at Artpark in nearby Lewiston, an outdoor performing arts venue at the top of the Niagara River Gorge with a Mainstage Theater and an Outdoor Amphitheater. Artpark is a unique blend of natural beauty, eye-catching visual arts, and live performances with a selection of dynamic offerings throughout the season.
After the show, head to one of Buffalo’s funky, thriving neighborhoods for good eats and good times. Stroll along Elmwood for the eccentric shops and distinctive boutiques, as well as first-class cuisine from the many quaint, yet chic restaurants and eateries spanning the strip. Head down into ever-changing historic Allentown for trendy bistros, old school music lounges, classy thrift stores, independent art galleries, upscale dining, and Buffalo’s legendary camaraderie. Go to one of the many nightspots on game night and you’re sure to find a swarm of blue jerseys. The city has two pro sports teams; the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. Sit down and watch the game with the locals, or head out to Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park or HSBC Arena downtown on the waterfront to experience the real excitement live. All this and more awaits you on your vacation to New York’s Niagara/Lake Erie Region. But there is much more to the region than Buffalo.
Niagara Falls, part of Niagara County, holds one of the most captivating natural wonders in the world. See the mighty cascades of the Niagara Falls, and get up close and personal with them through the Cave of the Winds, a journey into the caves behind the falls, or hitch a drenched ride on the Maid in the Mist, the chartered boat that tours around the bottom of the falls. But there is more in Niagara Falls then just the waterfalls. Tour Niagara Falls State Park, the older state park in the country, or spend the day at the Niagara Aquarium or the Niagara Aerospace Museum. If you’re feeling lucky, Niagara Falls offers the Seneca Niagara Casino, a popular destination for tourists and natives of the region alike. The Casino is a great time for all, complete with incredible dining and nightlife, big name live acts throughout the year, and of course all the games of chance you desire. North of the city of Niagara Falls, there is more to explore in Niagara County. Miles of coastline with Lake Ontario and five state parks maintaining the purity of the shore and landscape makes for a perfect picnic on a cool spring day or calm summer eve. Wine is always flowing from the many wineries scattered across the terrain, with tours and tastings available year-round. Chill out and stroll through the quaint towns for some antique and specialty shopping, and take home a little piece of Niagara on your next vacation.
Another popular vacation destination in Erie County is the town of Angola, and its close neighbor Angola-on-the-Lake. Settled on the pristine waterfront of Lake Erie, Angola is a town that has never lost its charm, and is known for its enchanting views and affinity for rest and relaxation. Spend your time on the lake taking in cool breezes and the breathtaking Lake Erie sunsets from the deck or private beach of one of the town’s array of lovely vacation homes dotting the coast and village. And only a short drive from Buffalo and Niagara Falls, you can enjoy a secluded getaway after spending the day taking in the sights and sounds of the region’s cultural highlights.
And there is much more around the region for you to find, with the Darien Lake Amusement Park and Amphitheater out in Darien, the Hubbard/Roycroft Museum of arts & crafts in East Aurora, the Erie Canal Discovery Center in Lockport where one end of the Erie Canal was built, even a Kazoo Factory in Eden where the only metal kazoos in the world are made, celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2007, complete with museum and gift shop so you can make music all the way home. And there is so much more. There’s no telling what you can find in the Niagara/Lake Erie Region of New York, but you can be sure that your vacation memories will last a lifetime.
